Injustice and the Ideology of Cruelty (4)

Allah’s Attitude towards People Who Are Cruel

Allah SWT has given His views, the cruel traits of cruel men in His many decrees before this, these traits are all against the teachings of Islam and totally unrelated to the Islamic religion, this matter is explained by Allah SWT by showing His attitude in facing these groups of cruel people and Allah’s threat towards these groups, as in the following decrees :

1)      Allah SWT’s Hatred of Them

Allah SWT’s Decree in Surah As Syuraa, verse 40, which said:

Which means: ` The recompense for any injury is an injury equal there to (in degree), but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah, for God loveth not those who do wrong.’

2)      Allah SWT will Punish Them with a Tremendously Painful Punishment.

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah As Syuraa, verse 42 that said:

Which means:` The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrong doing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice, for such there will be a penalty grievous.’

3)      Allah SWT Prepares for Them the Cursed Hell

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Kahfi, verse 29, which said:

Which means: ` For the wrong doers We have prepared  a fire whose (smoke and flames) like the walls and roof of a tent, will hem them in, if they implore relief they will be granted water like melted brass, that will scald their faces. How dreadful the drink! How uncomfortable a couch to recline on.’

4)      Allah SWT Makes Them Go Astray

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Ibrahim, verse 27, which said:

Which means: `God will establish in strength those who believe, with the word that stands firm, in this world and in the hereafter, but God will leave to stray those who do wrong., God doeth what He willeth.’

5)      Allah SWT Will Not Give Them Any Benefits.

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al An’aam, verse 21, which said:

Which means: `Who doth more wrong than he who inventeth a lie against God or rejected His Signs ? But verily the wrong doers never shall prosper.’

And again in Allah SWT’s decree in the same Surah, verse 135, which said:

Which means: `Say, ` Oh my people! Do whatever ye can: I will do (my part) soon will ye know who it is whose end will be ( best ) in the hereafter, certain it is that the wrong doers will not prosper.

6)      Allah Condemns and Will Not Forgive Them in the Hereafter

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Gafir, verse 52, which said:

Which means:` The Day when no profit will it be to wrong doers to present their excuses, but they will (only) have the curse and the home of misery.’

Also with Allah SWT’s Decree in Surah Al A’raaf, verse 44, which said:

Which means: ` A Crier shall proclaim between them:` The curse of God is on the wrong doers’.

Injustice and the Ideology of Cruelty (3)

`Who doth greater wrong than one who invents falsehood against God, even as he is being invited to Islam? And God guides not those who do wrong.’

The explanation from these two verses can be taken as an example that people who takes as jest, Allah’s teachings and commands after he has known the truth, are therefore, included in the group being cruel towards truth because they do not heed Islam’s teachings, as Allah SWT has barred their hearts from truthfulness.

4)      The Characteristic of Acceptance of Cruel Acts

Allah SWT’s Decree in surah Hud, verse 113 which reads :

Which means : ` And incline not to those who do wrong, or the fire of hell will sieze you; and ye have no protectors other than God, nor shall ye be helped’.

In this verse, Allah SWT explains that His servants should not accept the deeds of people who does acts of cruelty, because the feeling of acceptance is akin to participating in these acts until he too is included in that group and will be touched by hell fire (will be thrown into hell)

5)      The Characteristic of Killing without a Right to Do So

Allah SWT’S decree in surah Al Maidah, verses 31 and 32:

Which means: ` If thou dost stretch thy hand against me to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee, for I do fear God, the Cherisher of the Worlds. For me I intend to let thee draw on thyself my sin as well as thine, for thou wilt be among the companions of the fire, and that is the reward of those who do wrong’.

Allah SWT’s decree as above further explains clearly the prohibition of killing without a right to, because this act reflects a cruelty and is against Islamic teachings and this act is a major sin in Allah’s view, this matter is emphasized in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Maidah, verse 35 which reads :

` On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person- unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land- it would be as if he slew the whole people and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.’

In this verse, Allah SWT wants to give a description of the severity of the sin of wrongful killing, which is regarded by Allah SWT to be killing of  mankind and for someone who protects someone’s life is, as if protecting all of mankind.

6)      The Character of Liking to Degrade and Not Wanting to Repent

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Hujarat, verse 11 which reads :

O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others, it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former), nor let some women laugh at others it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former) nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other by offensive nicknames, ill seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.’

7)      The Character of Neglecting Trust

This as in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Ahzab, verse 72, which reads:

Which means:` We did indeed offer the trust to the Heavens and the earth and the mountains but they refused to undertake it; being afraid thereof; but man undertook it, he was indeed unjust and foolish’.

This verse gives a reminder to mankind to fulfill their trust and promise to Allah SWT and not to betray this trust so that they fulfill all Allah’s commands that are made compulsory upon them and leave all His prohibitions, otherwise they will be amongst those that are cruel.

8)      The Characteristic of Not Wanting to Implement Allah’s Laws

As in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Maidah, verse 48 which reads:

Which means: ` And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what God hath revealed, they are (no better than) the wrong doers.’

Allah SWT’s decree here confirms that disobedient people who do not want to obey and fulfill Allah’s punishment when they actually can, they too,  are to Allah, amongst those that are cruel.

9)      The Character of Liking to Disobey Allah’s Laws

Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al Baqarah, verse 229, which reads:

Which means : ` If any do transgress the limits ordained by God, such persons wrong (themselves as well as others).’

In this verse, Allah SWT gives a reminder to his creatures not to disobey the laws that Allah SWT has set, that is to ignore between the lawful and  forbidden matters that has been determined by Allah SWT, and whosoever goes against these are amongst people who are cruel.

10)      The Characteristic of Being Greedy and the Consumption of Unlawful Property

As in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah An Nisaa, verse 10, which reads:

Which means:` Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, eat up a fire into their own bodies, they will soon be enduring a blazing fire.’

Besides Allah SWT’s decree as above, there still are many traits, types of acts or behaviours that are grouped into the category of cruel characteristics, there are also many names and titles used, that can be categorized as acts and deeds that are cruel.

Injustice and the Ideology of Cruelty (2)

If Allah prohibits man from having a cruel trait, it’s definite that Allah SWT wants man to have the opposite trait, that is characteristics of compassion, politeness, affectionate, giving, loving and caring, respectful, just, doing good deeds and other similarly good characteristics. These are the characteristics taught in the Islamic religion and these are characteristics nurtured and enriched by those who have faith in Allah and are hopeful of His pleasure towards them in the hereafter.

Meaning and the Character of Cruelty

Islamic teachings emphasise that acts of cruelty are not just categorized by acts that are physical only, for example murdering innocent members of the public, destroying and vandalizing public property, acting violently, cruelly and with force, and oppressing individuals. Among others, what can be considered as cruel is also when someone has an understanding or concept within himself (in his heart), concepts that are destructive, feelings of jealousy, treachery, proud, haughtiness, `shirk’ (regarding others as partners with God), which in Islam is a major sin and having no faith in Allah.

This corresponds with the Prophet SAW’s hadith :

Which means: `There is in the body a clump of flesh – if it becomes good, the whole body becomes good and if it becomes bad, the whole body becomes bad, And indeed it is the heart”

If  we refer to the origin of the word cruel in the Arabic language, the word is originally  a verb;

8Fourty Hadiths Imam Nawawi; the 6th hadith; 9Idris AlMarbawi Arabic Malay Dictionary

Which means: He who ill treats or he who does cruel deeds.

From the origin of the word cruel, it can be deduced that the characteristic of being cruel happens in two ways, firstly it can happen upon the person himself, whereby he is cruel to himself and the harmful consequences befall upon himself and secondly a person does a cruel deed whereby the harm and destruction befall another party who has to bear the consequences of the actions of the cruel perpetrator.

Characteristics of Cruelty

Allah SWT has given many examples and similes that can be gathered in the category of cruel behaviour, being cruel directly portrays the thoughts and doctrine of the group, some examples and parables can be seen in Allah SWT’s decrees as follows:

1)      The character of being transgressor, disobedient and sinning

Which means :`But the transgressors changed the word from that which had been given them; so We sent on the transgressors a plague from heaven, for that they infringed on Our command repeatedly.’

In this verse Allah has gathered people who infringe on His commands, that is by committing sins, causing damages and destruction or doing sinful acts against Allah’s orders and command, as people who are cruel.

2)                   The Characteristic of Lying and Prohibiting Truth

As in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Hud, verse 18 which reads:

Which means:` Who doth more wrong than those who invent a lie against God? They will be turned back to the presence of their Lord, and the witnesses will say : These are the ones who lied against their Lord! Behold! the curse of God is on those who do wrong, those who hinder (men) from the path of God and would seek in it something crooked, these are those who denied the Hereafter.

In this verse, Allah SWT explains about the characteristics of cruel people, lying about Allah’s words, and denying the existence of the hereafter and hindering men from the straight path, they hate Islamic teachings and they try their best to lead others astray, taking them away from following this path.

3)      The Characteristic of Disobedience towards Truth

Alah SWT’s decree in surah Al Kahfi, verse 57 which reads :

Which means: `And who doth more wrong than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, but turns away from them, (forgetting the (deeds) which his hands have sent forth?

Verily We have set veils over their hearts, lest they should understand this, and over their ears, deafness. If thou calleth them to guidance, even then will they never accept guidance.’

And Allah’s decree in Surah Ash-Shaaf, verse 7 that reads: (Continue.....)

Injustice and the Ideology of Cruelty (1)

Injustice and the Ideology of Cruelty

(Ustaz Abdul Jalil Abdul Razak)

Allah SWT has many names for all of His most excellent characteristics, of which people of faith  utter and say many times over as praises to remember (zikir)  Him by and in prayers, an encouragement that can be understood from Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Al `Araf, verse 180, which reads:

Which means: `The most beautiful names belong to God, so call on Him by them.’

Also as had been said by the Prophet SAW- a `hadith’ (everything said by Prophet Muhammad SAW,that had been stringently authenticated, with regards an event),related by Abu Hurairah r.a.

Which means :`Allah has 99 names,  and whoever comprehends them all will enter paradise, and He is Indivisible and loves that which is indivisible’.

From the many names and characteristics of Allah SWT, most noble and Exalted, a characteristic He forbids linked to His essence is cruelty, in even as miniscule as the tiniest particle to be found as any part of the essence of Allah and Allah prohibits this to all mankind and forbids them from being cruel.

3Complete Dictionary : the meaning of cruelty page1238

The word `cruel’ in Arabic reflects something that can mean a cruel demeanour, fierce, with no compassion, like seeing people in pain and distress, doing wrongful deeds, oppression, destruction of property, injustice and many other meanings deriving from the character of being cruel, which at its foundation, is a characteristic that is vile and despicable and against the nature of man who is honourable who should use the gift of his mind for doing good deeds to prosper and harmonise the earth.

The concept or ideology of cruelty is a form of thought whether organized or not, that produces a deed or action that is cruel and this can exists within an individual irrespective of  his background, culture or religion, and it can also exists in individuals, groups or within the administration of a state. This can be seen from the leaves of man’s history which is full of cruel acts. This subject had been uttered by the angels to Allah, as in Allah’s decree in surah Al Baqarah, verse 30 which means :

`They said:` Wilt Thou place them therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy Holy (name)?’

If examined, the cruel traits, all of which go against the teachings of the holy religion of Islam because Islam doesn’t teach its followers to conduct any sort of cruelty and forbids strongly any concept or acts of cruelty, a prohibition not only towards each individual but also amongst mankind, animals and Allah’s other creatures.  This prohibition is clearly embodied in Allah SWT’s decree in Surah Ali Imran, verse 182:

Which means:` For Allah never harms those who serves Him’.

In Surah An Nisaa, verse 40:

`Allah is never unjust in the least degree, if there is any good (done), He doubleth it, and giveth from His own presence a great reward.’

Allah SWT’s Decree in Surah Yunus, verse 44:

Which means : ` Verily God will not deal unjustly with man in aught; it is man that wrongs his own soul’.

Allah had also informed his Prophet Muhammad SAW in a` Hadith Qudsi ’ (meaning `based on Allah’s saying  in the Prophet’s words) about the prohibition of being cruel:

3Complete Dictionary : the meaning of cruelty page1238
4Surah Israil verse 70: We have honoured the sons of Adam…

Which means: `From Abu Dzar Al-Ghafri r.a., from the Prophet SAW who said`from Allah Azzawajalla, that Allah said : My servants! That I have forbidden cruelty in Me and make it a prohibition amongst yourselves, therefore don’t you be cruel and cause hurt to each other. My servants! You are hungry except those that I feed, therefore all of you ask of Me for food, that I will feed you. My servants! All of you are naked, except those I clothe, therefore ask you of Me to clothe you. My servants! All of you sin at night and in the day and only I can forgive you all your sins, therefore ask of Me for forgiveness that I will forgive all your sins. My servants! All of you cannot plan anything to hurt Me and all of you cannot plan to benefit Me. My servants! If all of you from before and all of you from the later times band together, whether mankind or jinns all faithful like the faith of a man’s heart amongst you, this does not in any way add to My kingdom. My servants! If all of you from before and all of you from the later times band together, whether mankind or jinns, all of whom are evil like the evil in a man’s heart amongst you, this will not in any way decrease even a little from My kingdom. My servants! If all of you from before and from the later times gather together on a flat land and each of you makes a request to whom I grant to each and every one his request, this in no way at all lessen anything from My kingdom, it is as if a needle falling into the to curse.’

Allah SWT’s decree and the `Hadith Quds’  above confirms that Allah is never cruel to His creatures, and Allah SWT also prohibits each of His creatures from doing cruel things to each other, that He prohibits this character to be part of His holy essence. Allah will not do cruel things to men, no matter their backgrounds , whether they have or haven’t any faith in Him,  whether they are non-believers or those taking other gods alongside Allah as gods (shirk). Allah does not repay with cruelty even the person that is cruel to himself as this is against the characteristic of Allah, Most Exalted....(continue.1)

Artikel Ringkas "Bapa Misali (Ain Society 6 Jun 15)"

Kewajiban Orang Tua Terhadap Anak

Allah Ta’ala berfirman :

Tanggong Jawab Anak Kepada Orang Tua
